Subokbang House

Subokbang House, also known as the Caretakers' Lodge, housed the shrine's caretakers, totaling thirty individuals responsible for maintaining the royal shrine around the clock. This four-room building with a gabled roof was connected to the northern wall of Jeongjeon Dongmun. Unfortunately, a fire once ravaged the shrine part of Subokbang. The fire had devastating consequences for the most crucial state institution of the Joseon Dynasty. Following its extinguishment, the shrine's chief manager discovered that the fire was not accidental. A group of burglars had unlawfully entered the shrine, stole valuables and set fire to erase evidence of their intrusion. Shockingly, this group included caretakers of the royal ancestral shrine. Committing crimes against such a sacred place as the royal ancestral shrine was unthinkable during the Joseon Period. As the Chief Manager of the shrine unequivocally declared, the act of stealing valuable religious items from and setting fire to the shrine constituted an unforgivable crime, widely perceived as an ominous sign for the future of the Joseon Dynasty.
